How to Measure a Watch Strap - Fast-Fix Jewelry and Watch Repairs

Whether you’re replacing your old watch strap or choosing a new one, accurate measurements are key to ensuring a perfect fit. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to measure a watch strap using different methods and explore the standard strap lengths available.

Watch Strap Basics

Before measuring a strap, it's important to understand some basic terms. The two most crucial aspects of a watch strap’s size are its width and length.

  1. Lugs and Lug Width: The lugs are the small protrusions on the watch case where the strap attaches. The lug width is the distance between the lugs, measured in millimeters (mm). This dimension is crucial, as it determines the width of the strap you need. Most commonly, straps come in widths ranging from 16mm to 24mm, but you’ll need to measure your watch’s lugs to get the correct size.
  2. Strap Width and Length: The strap width refers to the size of the strap where it connects to the watch, measured in mm. The strap length is the total length of the strap, including both parts of the band that fasten on either side. Common strap lengths vary and are typically listed as "short," "regular," or "long," which we’ll explain later.

Measuring with a Ruler

The simplest tool to measure your watch strap is a ruler. Follow these easy steps:

  1. Lay your watch strap flat and use the millimeter (mm) side of the ruler, not inches.
  2. For the lug width, measure the distance between the inside edges of the lugs. This gives you the correct width of the strap.
  3. For the strap length, measure the length of both parts of the strap (the buckle side and the holes side) to get the total length.

Measuring with Digital Calipers

For the most precise measurement, a digital caliper is the best option. This tool provides accuracy to fractions of a millimeter, which is helpful when you want a perfect fit. To measure with digital calipers:

  1. Open the calipers and place the measuring tips on the inside of the lugs to measure the lug width.
  2. Close the calipers to measure the strap’s width and thickness, if necessary.
  3. For strap length, measure each part of the strap carefully.

Standard Strap Lengths

With these measurements in hand, you’ll be able to confidently select the perfect strap for your watch and ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

Watch straps come in various lengths, which affect their fit and comfort. The standard strap lengths are:

  • Short: 100mm (holes) x 60mm (buckle)
  • Regular: 110mm (holes) x 70mm (buckle)
  • Long: 120mm (holes) x 80mm (buckle)
  • Extra-Long: 120mm (holes) x 100mm (buckle)

The first number represents the length of the strap part with the holes (the adjustable section), while the second number corresponds to the part with the buckle.

With these measurements in hand, you’ll be able to confidently select the perfect strap for your watch and ensure a comfortable and secure fit.
